EXTRACTION FOR ADULTS

Most people don’t realize that their teeth are as important as their skin and hair. People are willing to take extreme steps to look young, but they ignore when a tooth hurts. You use your teeth for a lot of purposes, from chewing and grinding food to defining how you look. Neglecting dental care can result in cavities, decay, loss of enamel, discoloration, and infection, among others, which may lead to severe consequences.

Every dental problem has a solution that will attempt to save your teeth, such as root canal for teeth infections and abscesses. While we will try to save your tooth, there are some problems where a tooth extraction is the only option.

Do I Need to Worry?

No matter what the problem is, our priority is to save your tooth. But, if your tooth is beyond repair, we will need to extract it. A tooth extraction is nothing to be worried about. It can be very uncomfortable and painful, but at Smiles on the Canal, we will ensure that you feel at ease during your appointment.

During your appointment, your dentist at our clinic will examine your teeth and diagnose the problem. If tooth extraction is recommended, you will be administered localized anesthesia to ensure that the procedure is painless.

Will I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Permanent teeth usually last a lifetime. But due to the following reasons, we may need to extract your tooth:

  • Orthodontia: This procedure is done to align the misaligned teeth properly. Sometimes your dentist may pull out a tooth to prepare the mouth for the procedure.
  • Risk of infection: In situations such as chemotherapy or organ transplant, your immune system is compromised. The risk of infection is high in such cases, and the disease can even spread to other teeth sooner.
  • Infection: If your tooth decay extends to the pulp, bacteria in the mouth can enter the pulp, and lead to infection which is often treated by a root canal. But if the infection is severe and antibiotics don’t cure it, then extraction is the only solution.
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is described as an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth. Tooth extraction becomes necessary when gum disease causes loosening of the tooth.
  • Damaged tooth: It is the most common reason for tooth extraction. When a tooth is damaged due to trauma, decay, or other reasons, and it is beyond repair, tooth extraction is needed.

Dental Care After a Tooth Extraction

The post-procedure care after a tooth extraction involves:

  • A warm compress for a sore and stiff jaw.
  • An ice pack to the affected area for 15 minutes at a time in case of pain or swelling.
  • Pain medication recommended by your dentist in case of severe pain.
  • Avoiding the extraction area while brushing and flossing.
  • Avoiding smoking or use of any tobacco products for at least 48 hours.
  • Consumption of soft food for the first few days.
  • Rinsing with salt water to keep the area clean.

A little bit of bleeding post-extraction is normal, but if you have any other problems such as fever, trouble swallowing, numbness and such, you must visit your dentist. Though an extraction is nothing to be worried about, a good dental care regimen may have helped save the tooth.
