A good dental hygiene regimen is needed to keep you healthy for a long time, starting in your youth. It is so important to have your child visit a pediatric dentist regularly to ensure that their teeth and gums are healthy, and to address any issues that you may not even know are there!
TEETH CLEANING
Does Your Child Need Teeth Cleaning?
Even if your child follows a healthy dental care regimen, you will need to get their teeth cleaned regularly as sometimes, brushing or flossing may fail to remove some particles. Many people think of the mouth as separate completely from the rest of the body. But that is not true. Your child’s dental problems may act as an indicator of disease in other parts of their body. If you want your child to get started with maintaining their oral health, then teeth cleaning (dental hygiene) must be an essential part of their oral care.
What Happens During Teeth Cleaning?
Teeth cleanings or dental hygiene appointments are best performed by a dental hygienist. During your child’s hygiene appointment, your dental hygienist at Smiles On The Canal Dentistry will do the following:
Conduct a physical examination: Your dental hygienist will use a small mirror to look around your child’s teeth and gums. The physical examination is done to look for signs of inflamed gums or other potential concerns.
X-rays: Sometimes what you see is NOT what you get. X-rays help detect cavities and other problems that are lurking below the gums or between the teeth. X-rays are not taken at every visit, only when they are deemed essential to performing a thorough check-up or if there is a particular concern we need to discuss.
Remove all plaque, tartar and stains: Your dental hygienist will use a combination of hand instruments and high-powered polisher to remove plaque, tartar and stains from around your child’s gum line and from between their teeth.
Fluoride treatment: A fluoride varnish is applied to the teeth to help protect and reinforce the enamel after your professional cleaning. It is a great preventive measure to fight against cavities!
Brush with gritty toothpaste: Once your child’s teeth are tartar free, your dental hygienist will brush them with a high-powered electric brush and a toothpaste with a gritty consistency. The brush and the toothpaste will gently scrub and polish your teeth.
Flossing: Nothing beats an expert flossing session as your dental hygienist can floss deep between your teeth and locate any potential trouble spots. Professional flossing removes any leftover plaque or toothpaste from the cleaning process.
Rinsing: A rinse that contains liquid fluoride is given to you for rinsing. Rinsing helps you to get rid of any debris from the cleaning process.
Fluoride treatment: It is the last step of the cleaning process. It is used as a preventive measure to help fight against cavities. A foamy gel is applied into a mouthpiece which is placed over your teeth and left for a minute. Apart from the foamy gel, fluoride varnish is also applied to the teeth using a small brush which hardens when it comes in contact with saliva.
